I’m the MD of a Kingston IT support company called IQ in IT. I’m also President of the Kingston Chamber of Commerce, a not-for-profit business support organisation. As President, I was asked to choose a local organisation for the Chamber and its members to support during my presidency. For me it was an obvious choice to nominate Citizen Zoo.

The Chamber will promote the work of Citizen Zoo and help with things like fundraising, awareness, and connecting businesses who can offer practical support. As President I host a lot of events and talks, I’m looking forward to using these opportunities to raise awareness of Citizen Zoo.

With so many deserving causes to choose from locally, people ask me why I have chosen Citizen Zoo. As an individual and as a business owner, I feel a huge responsibility to be ethical and environmentally friendly. As a company, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, from using electric vehicles for our client visits, to paperless technology, and giving back to the community we are part of. I love nature and wildlife and have done from a young age. I grew up in a small town in the Czech Republic, surrounded by trees and fields bursting with birds and animals. I’d spend hours outside, just enjoying nature. As a child, our house was always full of injured wild birds or animals that we rescued. We also had dogs, cats, chickens, rabbits, and goats, but it was the wild animals I loved the most.

I’ve lived in and around Kingston for the last 15 years. Having my own business means I work long hours, and spend most of my day inside on a computer. So, when I’m not working, I will head outside for a walk, I am drawn to rivers and parks where I can spend time with nature. I start my day walking my dog, Dora. One of my favourite spots to walk locally is on the Hogsmill River. I love that it’s a hidden pocket of nature that runs through some lovely countryside, it’s the perfect way to escape from the stress of life and reconnect with nature.

For me the positive side to the COVID pandemic has been spending more time outside. As a nation we have rediscovered the simple pleasures of just having a walk and looking at birds and trees. People are travelling less and exploring their local area in a new way, bringing clear benefits for the environment. As the world recovers from the pandemic, I hope the newfound appreciation of nature remains forefront.

When I first met Elliot and the Citizen Zoo team at an event at the Rose theatre, I was impressed by their passion to restore some of the nature lost in our urban world. The Hogsmill River is one of my favourite spots, so when I heard about the water vole campaign, I knew I had to get involved. As a company IQ in IT have pledged our support to this campaign, and we’re excited to see this locally extinct animal reintroduced to this stretch of water. Citizen Zoo works incredibly hard to rewild local habitats and encourage people to care for nature through conservation. When I had the opportunity to nominate an organisation to support as Chamber President, it had to be Citizen Zoo. I’m encouraging the local business community to get involved and join the mission to rewild Kingston.
