  • Susan, Citizen Zoo Member

I became a member because I was hugely impressed by the nature and scale of the various projects undertaken by the team across London. Being a member is another important way in which I can contribute to and share in the vision of restoring London’s wildlife. I am thrilled to be a fundamental part of helping Citizen Zoo’s vision become reality.
  • Alasdair, Citizen Zoo Member

By becoming a member of Citizen Zoo you will be part of a close-knit, like-minded community of people united by a common cause and desire to reverse the catastrophic decline in populations of British wildlife, whilst at the same time making new friends, encountering some of Britain's most iconic wildlife and having fun in the process
  • Richard, Citizen Zoo Member

I started my membership with Citizen Zoo back in 2021 and it has been a delight to watch the organisation grow while knowing that I am in some way playing a part. The expansion of their projects over the past few years is a testament to how memberships can help to make a significant impact on the world of rewilding, especially in urban areas like London.

BRINGING SPECIES BACK TO OUR CITIES

Beavers once thrived across the UK, but over the centuries, they disappeared from our landscapes. Now, for the first time in 400 years, we’ve brought them back to London. Through collaboration with local communities, councils, and with support from Mayor Sadiq Khan, Citizen Zoo has reintroduced beavers to the city. This pioneering project is just the beginning, as we plan to expand reintroduction efforts to more locations across London, restoring natural ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, and demonstrating how wildlife can coexist with urban life.

REWILDING HEARTS AND MINDS

At Citizen Zoo, we're dedicated to making nature accessible to all. Our initiatives bring young carers, people with disabilities, and other underserved groups into the natural world, fostering a deep connection with wildlife and conservation. By rewilding hearts and minds, we’re not only nurturing a love for nature but also creating inclusive opportunities that empower everyone to participate in and benefit from rewilding efforts.

RESTORING HABITATS AND ECOSYSTEMS

Rivers across the UK have suffered from habitat loss and biodiversity decline, leaving species like the water vole at risk. Through our water vole reintroduction programme, we’re working to restore and revitalise river habitats, creating ecosystems where wildlife can thrive once more. By supporting Citizen Zoo, you’re helping to bring back these iconic species and rebuild healthy, balanced river ecosystems that benefit all life along our waterways.

CHAMPIONING THE INTRINSIC VALUE OF ALL LIFE

At Citizen Zoo, we believe in the intrinsic value of all species, no matter their size or popularity. While invertebrates like the large marsh grasshopper often go unnoticed, they play a crucial role in supporting functional ecosystems. Despite significant declines over recent decades, these grasshoppers and other vital invertebrates are essential for a healthy environment. That’s why we’re committed to rewilding efforts across all species groups, recognising the importance of every life form in sustaining our natural world.

Opportunities Through Rewilding

Reviving Species Populations

Rewilding offers the opportunity to bring species back from the brink, allowing populations to recover and thrive. By creating safe habitats, removing pressures, and fostering natural processes, we can reverse the trends of extinction and restore biodiversity. Rewilding is not just about preserving species; it’s about giving wildlife the space to flourish and reintegrate as vital parts of our ecosystems.

Restoring Habitats and Landscapes

Through rewilding, we can regenerate degraded habitats and reimagine landscapes to support diverse life forms. From forests and grasslands to rivers and wetlands, restoring these areas enhances natural resilience, helps mitigate climate change, and revitalises entire ecosystems. Rewilded landscapes offer a renewed sense of place, filled with the richness and variety of life that once shaped them.

Rebuilding Ecosystems – Our Life Support Systems

Ecosystems are our planet’s life support systems, providing clean air, water, and soil health essential for all life. Rewilding allows us to rebuild these systems, fostering self-sustaining, functional ecosystems that serve as the foundation for environmental and human well-being. By restoring balance, rewilding strengthens our connection to the natural world and helps ensure a stable, thriving planet for future generations.
