Join our Water Vole Task Force

Are you passionate about wildlife conservation and eager to make a tangible impact on local biodiversity? Look no further! Citizen Zoo is seeking dedicated volunteers to join our Water Vole Task Force and play a crucial role in our Get InVOLEd water vole reintroduction project.

Tolworth Court Farm Today - Ancient Hedgerows and Meadows

Opportunity

Water voles, the UK's fastest-declining mammal, are at risk of disappearing forever due to ongoing habitat degradation and severe predation by non-native American mink. However, after a successful community-led campaign, water voles have returned to the Hogsmill River in 2022. Now, we need your help to ensure they thrive!

As a member of the Water Vole Task Force, you will have the opportunity to:

- Maintain and repair clay mink rafts and Smart rafts to help us monitor mink on the river

- Conduct bi-monthly checks on existing Smart rafts for monitoring mink

- Manage camera traps and address technical issues

- Perform regular stock takes for raft and camera supplies

- Collaborate with fellow volunteers and staff to address monitoring issues effectively

- Work independently and responsibly without direct staff supervision

We are looking for individuals with a passion for wildlife conservation, basic technical proficiency (although we will provide training), strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, and the ability to work autonomously while adhering to project goals and guidelines. The level of commitment will depend on the number of volunteers, with a minimum time commitment of 1-2 hours per month.

Fieldwork will be required, so a degree of physical fitness and comfort with outdoor activities is essential. By joining the Water Vole Task Force, you will contribute significantly to the conservation of water voles and the protection of their habitat, making a positive impact on local biodiversity and helping preserve a vital part of our natural heritage.
