There are over 200 species of woodpecker in the world, but just 3 species in the UK. They are the great spotted woodpecker, lesser spotted woodpecker, and the green woodpecker.
Great spotted and the rarer lesser spotted woodpecker are primarily woodland birds, where they beat their heads on trees to unearth wood-boring insects and excavate nests. Green woodpeckers are more often found in open spaces with scattered trees and rarely drum on trees.
